Discover more about Place des petits bancs

The Place des Petits Bancs is a historically significant square located in the heart of La Rochelle. Its name originates from the small benches or tables ('petits bancs') used by bankers during the Middle Ages, who conducted their transactions in small lodges surrounding the square. This is where the word 'banque' (bank) comes from. For many years, a fountain occupied the center of the square. However, in 1905, it was replaced by a bronze bust of Eugène Fromentin, a painter and writer from La Rochelle who specialized in Orientalism. The bust is accompanied by a life-size equestrian statue of an Arab performing a fantasia, a traditional North African equestrian display of war. On the southeast side of the square, you'll find a beautiful 16th-century Renaissance building, a testament to La Rochelle's rich architectural heritage. Today, the Place des Petits Bancs provides a peaceful interlude in the city center, where history and art converge.
