Discover more about Les Quatre Châteaux de Lastours

Les Quatre Châteaux de Lastours, a quartet of medieval castles, command a striking position atop a rocky ridge overlooking the village of Lastours. This archaeological site comprises the ruins of Cabaret, Tour Régine, Surdespine, and Quertinheux, each टेस्टament to the region's tumultuous past. The castles, strategically built at an altitude of 300 meters, контролировать the valleys of the Orbeil and Grésilhou rivers. Originally constructed in the 11th century by the lords of Cabaret, the castles' wealth stemmed from nearby iron mines. The fortress played a significant role during the Albigensian Crusade, providing refuge for Cathars. Over the centuries, the castles underwent numerous alterations, reflecting the changing military architecture. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, hike along the well-maintained trails, and imagine life in medieval Languedoc. The site is divided into two parts: the panoramic viewpoint at the Belvédère and the castle grounds themselves. The Belvédère, located a short drive from the village, offers breathtaking views of the four castles. From there, a hiking path leads to the castles, allowing visitors to explore each ruin and discover the site's rich history. The site has been recognized as a monument historique since 1905.
