Discover more about Château de Puilaurens

Château de Puilaurens, a ruined Cathar castle, sits atop a rocky spur 697 meters (2,287 feet) high in the French Aude département. For four centuries, this southernmost fortress of France guarded access to the Fenouillèdes region. The castle exemplifies fortifications commanded by the central stronghold of Carcassonne, defending territory and the border with the Kingdom of Aragon in the 13th century. Originally belonging to the Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa in 985, the castle later came under the King of Aragon in 1162. The first known castellan, Pierre Catala, is recorded in 1217. By 1250, the castle was annexed by the French crown. King Louis IX ordered its fortification in 1255. Its defenses were tested repeatedly by Spanish incursions until the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. Abandoned by the end of the 17th century, it fell into ruin after the French Revolution. Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved walls, towers, and main courtyard. The winding corridors and arrow slits offer a glimpse into medieval life. Legend tells of the Dame Blanche, a niece of Philippe le Bel, who wanders the ramparts on pale nights. From the heights, panoramic views stretch across the Boulzane valley, revealing forests, mountains, and cliffs.
