Discover more about Maison Traditionnelle de la Boucherie

Step back in time at the Maison Traditionnelle de la Boucherie, a historical landmark in Limoges' picturesque Quartier de la Boucherie. This traditional house, one of 52 built in the early 13th century, was dedicated to the butchery trade. For centuries, this area was the heart of the butchers' community, and this house at 36 Rue de la Boucherie, evokes the activity of this corporation. Inside this écomusée, discover how butcher families lived and worked. On the ground floor, they slaughtered, sold, and cooked their products. The upper floors were living spaces, while the attics were used for drying hundreds of sheep and pig skins. Tools, photographs, writings, and furniture poignantly illustrate the daily lives and traditions of this close-knit community. The Quartier de la Boucherie was spared from demolitions in the 20th century. Today, the area comes alive each year during the Frairie des Petits Ventres, held on the third Friday of October, commemorating Limoges' butchers' corporation. A visit to the Maison Traditionnelle de la Boucherie offers a unique insight into a vital aspect of Limoges' history, as important as its renowned porcelain. The Maison Traditionnelle de la Boucherie is open in summer from the beginning of July to the end of August, from Tuesday to Saturday and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
