Venture into the depths of the Villars Cave, the only cave in the Périgord region that houses both original prehistoric paintings and breathtaking natural concretions. This remarkable site, also known as Grotte du Cluzeau, invites you to explore a world shaped by water and time, adorned with the artistic expressions of Cro-Magnon hunter-gatherers.Discovered in 1953 by the Périgueux Spéléo Club, the cave extends over 13 kilometers, revealing immense chambers and galleries carved by an underground river. As you meander through 600 meters of easily navigable corridors, you'll be captivated by the forests of stalactites, stalagmites, draperies, and eccentrics that embellish every surface. A sound and light show illuminates select formations, enhancing their already impressive features.The cave's prehistoric section showcases paintings created over 19,000 years ago, depicting animals such as horses, bison, and ibex, as well as intriguing geometric signs. The renowned "little blue horse" and the scene of the "bison and the sorcerer" are among the most captivating. These artworks, rendered in black manganese oxide and later covered by a thin layer of calcite, offer a rare glimpse into the minds of our ancient ancestors.Beyond the cave itself, the site features a Cro-Magnon garden, an educational park where visitors can learn about the environment and lifestyle of Cro-Magnon man.
