    Discover more about Barrage Vauban

The Barrage Vauban, also known as the Vauban Dam, is a remarkable structure that stands as a testament to 17th-century military engineering. Erected on the River Ill between 1686 and 1690, this bridge, weir, and defensive work was designed by Jacques Tarade based on plans by the renowned military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. Originally called the Great Lock, it played a crucial role in the city's defenses. The primary function of the Barrage Vauban was to protect Strasbourg by enabling the flooding of lands south of the city in the event of an attack. This strategic measure aimed to make the area impassable to enemies, and it was notably deployed during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 when Prussian forces besieged Strasbourg. The dam features 13 arches and stretches 120 meters in length.Today, the Barrage Vauban is a popular tourist destination, offering both historical insight and stunning views. The interior gallery has been transformed into an exhibition space, showcasing sculptures and providing historical context. Visitors can also access a panoramic terrace on the roof, which was rebuilt in 1965-66, to enjoy views of the Petite France district, the Covered Bridges (Ponts Couverts), and the Strasbourg Cathedral. Admission to the barrage and terrace is free.Inside the structure, an enclosed corridor connects the two banks, and a lapidarium displays ancient plaster casts and copies of statues and gargoyles from Strasbourg Cathedral and Palais Rohan. Three of the arches can be raised to allow navigation, with drawbridges facilitating passage across the corridor. The Barrage Vauban is located near the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and the Commanderie Saint-Jean.
