Tiny Train of the Upper Somme (APPEVA)

The Tiny Train of the Upper Somme, managed by APPEVA (Association Picarde pour la Préservation et l'Entretien des Véhicules Anciens), offers a unique glimpse into the past. This heritage railway is the last surviving section of the 600 mm narrow-gauge trench railways used during World War I. Built in 1916 by the Allied forces, the railway played a crucial role in supplying the front lines during the Battle of the Somme. Today, visitors can enjoy a 14 km round trip from Froissy to Dompierre, traversing the picturesque Somme Valley. The journey showcases the region's beauty, with rolling hills, lush greenery, and tranquil ponds. The route includes notable features like a 200-meter tunnel and a zig-zag section that allows the train to climb the hillside. In addition to the scenic ride, the site features a rail museum that displays an extensive collection of narrow-gauge rolling stock. The museum's exhibits tell the story of these little trains from 1880 to the present day, featuring steam and diesel engines, wagons, and other railway equipment.
