The Tumulus de la Folatière is a fascinating historical site located in the commune of Luxé, in the Charente department of France. This prehistoric burial mound, or tumulus, dates back to the Neolithic period (4500 to 3000 BC), offering a glimpse into the lives and burial practices of the region's early inhabitants.Originally, the tumulus measured 120 meters in length and 20 meters in height in the mid-19th century. However, due to stone removal over time, it has settled to its current dimensions of 143 meters long and 10 meters high. According to historical accounts, the southeastern end of the structure once featured four conical eminences, and the tumulus was flanked by two dolmens, which have since been destroyed. A smaller circular tumulus once stood to the south, featuring a large limestone block known as the Dolmen du Roc.Today, the Tumulus de la Folatière is a classified historical monument. While it has never been systematically excavated or studied, it remains an imposing and intriguing site for visitors interested in history and archaeology. The surrounding area offers a tranquil setting, inviting contemplation and exploration of this ancient landmark. Please note that the tumulus is located on private property, and closer inspection may not be possible.
