Discover more about Foujita Chapel

The Foujita Chapel, formally known as the Chapel of Our Lady Queen of Peace, stands as a remarkable fusion of Franco-Japanese artistry in Reims. Constructed in 1965-1966, this chapel is the vision of Tsuguharu Foujita, a Japanese painter who became a prominent member of the School of Paris. Foujita's conversion to Catholicism in 1959, after experiencing a mystical moment at the Basilica of Saint-Remi, inspired the chapel's creation. René Lalou, chairman of Mumm Champagne and Foujita's godfather, supported Foujita's vision to build a Romanesque chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Foujita meticulously designed the chapel, including the stained glass windows, ironwork, sculptures, and frescoes. The interior artwork combines Christian themes with Japanese artistic elements, reflecting Foujita's background as a Franco-Japanese painter. The chapel's walls are adorned with religious iconography in blues, greens, browns, and yellows. These frescoes depict scenes from Christ's life and include depictions of Foujita, his wife Kimiko, René Lalou, and Lalou's wife. The chapel was consecrated on October 1, 1966, and later donated to the city of Reims. Foujita and his last wife, Kimiyo, are buried here. The chapel was listed as a historic monument of France in 1992. Today, the Foujita Chapel stands as a testament to the artist's unique vision and spiritual journey, drawing visitors with its serene atmosphere and blend of cultural influences.
