Discover more about Le Palais du Parlement de Bretagne

Located in the heart of Rennes, the Palais du Parlement de Bretagne is a striking testament to Breton history and architectural grandeur. Constructed between 1618 and 1655, it served as the seat of the Parliament of Brittany until its dissolution in 1790. The palace was designed by Salomon de Brosse, also the architect of the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris. The palace's architecture blends Renaissance and Baroque styles, featuring a symmetrical facade, elegant arcades, and lavish decorations. A distinctive dome, added in the 19th century, crowns the building and has become an iconic part of the Rennes skyline. Inside, visitors can admire the Grand' Chambre, adorned with gilded woodwork and elaborate ceiling frescoes. The Palais du Parlement de Bretagne has faced turbulent times, including a devastating fire in 1994 caused by protesting fishermen. The fire destroyed the roof, damaged the structure, and destroyed countless documents. However, thanks to the efforts of firefighters and the community, much of the building and its artwork were saved. The palace was meticulously restored and reopened in 2004. Today, the Palais du Parlement de Bretagne houses the Court of Appeal and the Cour d'Assises d'Ille et Vilaine. Guided tours are available, offering insights into the palace's history, architecture, and art.
