Discover more about Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, located on the Quai Émile Zola, offers an encyclopedic journey through the history of art, from antiquity to the present day. Founded in 1794 during the French Revolution, the museum's initial collection comprised artworks confiscated from religious and public buildings. A significant portion of its holdings comes from the private collection of Christophe-Paul de Robien (1698–1756), a president of the Parlement of Rennes. The museum's collections include European paintings from the 14th to 18th centuries, with masterpieces by Veronese, Rubens, and Georges de La Tour. The 19th-century is represented through works by Caillebotte, Sisley, Gauguin, and Sérusier. The museum also features a collection of antiquities, including Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, and Roman artifacts. A cabinet of drawings includes works by Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer, Botticelli and Rembrandt. Since 1975, the museum has expanded its collection to represent various artistic movements of the 20th century, with acquisitions like Yves Tanguy's surrealist work, L'Inspiration (1929). The museum also showcases contemporary artists from the region, including Geneviève Asse, Raymond Hains, and Jacques Villeglé. The Musée des Beaux-Arts also has a second exhibition space in the Maurepas district.
