Discover more about Le Palais du Parlement de Bretagne

The Palais du Parlement de Bretagne, or Palace of the Parliament of Brittany, is an iconic building in Rennes, Brittany, France. Constructed between 1618 and 1655, it served as the seat of the Breton Parliament until its dissolution in 1790 during the French Revolution. Today, the Palais houses the Court of Appeal of Rennes. The palace was commissioned by the Breton Parliament as a symbol of Breton autonomy within the Kingdom of France. Designed initially by Salomon de Brosse, the palace showcases a blend of Renaissance and Baroque styles. Over the centuries, the Palais du Parlement de Bretagne has undergone several transformations. In 1720, the heart of Rennes was rebuilt after a major fire, and the Palais was one of the few buildings that was spared, thanks to firebreaks. In 1994, a devastating fire damaged much of the interior. However, the building was reopened in 2004 after major restoration works. Visitors can take guided tours to explore the palace's ostentatiously gilded rooms and learn about its history. The Grand'Chambre, adorned with gilded woodwork and ceiling frescoes, is a highlight. The palace also hosts temporary exhibitions that delve into Brittany's history and culture.
