Discover more about Ceramics Museum - Meeting of Metropolitan Museums (RMM)

The Musée de la Céramique in Rouen, also known as the Meeting of Metropolitan Museums (RMM), is an artistic haven showcasing centuries of ceramic artistry. Housed in the beautifully preserved 17th-century Hôtel d'Hocqueville, the museum provides an enchanting backdrop for exploring the rich history of ceramics. The building itself is a work of art, featuring a Neoclassical-style interior design. The Hôtel d'Hocqueville is built on the ruins of the castle of Rouen, which was itself built on the ruins of the Gallo-Roman amphitheater of Rotomagus. The museum's collection comprises around 5,000 pieces, providing a comprehensive overview of Rouen earthenware from the 16th to the late 18th century. It also features remarkable collections from other earthenware centers, including Delft, Nevers, and Lille, situating its local history within the broader context of European ceramics. The circuit begins with a display of the earliest European earthenware, majolica, produced in Italy between the 15th and 18th centuries. Visitors can admire Renaissance paving by Masséot Abaquesne, large ceremonial dishes with radiating decoration from the early 18th century, and monumental earthenware paintings and sculptures, such as the Celestial and Terrestrial Globes by Pierre II Chapelle. Rouen majolica represents over two-thirds of the collections. The museum also exhibits Renaissance floors and large ceremonial plates with early 18th-century decorations. The museum's most celebrated masterpieces have been staged to greater effect, highlighting the useful purpose of these objects in reconstructed interiors.
