The Château de Saint-Malo stands as a proud symbol of the city's rich maritime history and strategic importance. Construction began in 1424 by John V, Duke of Brittany, with the purpose of controlling the city. The original structure was a D-shaped keep, later expanded with towers by subsequent rulers like Francis II and his daughter Anne.
Over the centuries, the castle has witnessed sieges, political turmoil, and military conflicts. In 1590, local citizens stormed the castle to prevent its governor from aligning with the Protestant King Henry IV. The renowned military engineer Vauban further strengthened the castle's defenses in the 17th century. During World War II, the castle suffered damage from American bombardment but was later liberated.
Today, the Château de Saint-Malo houses the Musée d'Histoire de la Ville et du Pays Malouin, offering visitors a glimpse into the city's past. Exhibits cover Saint-Malo's maritime traditions, famous explorers like Jacques Cartier, and the era of privateers. Climbing the castle towers rewards visitors with panoramic views of the old town, harbor, and coastline.

Getting There
Walking
From the Saint-Malo train station, walk northwest along Avenue Anita Conti, then turn left onto Chaussée du Sillon. Continue along the coast, passing the Grand Plage on your right. Turn left toward the city walls and enter Intra-Muros through the Porte Saint-Vincent. The Château de Saint-Malo is located on Place Chateaubriand, at the northeast corner of the walled city. Walking this route takes approximately 25 minutes. There are no costs associated with this route.
Public Transport
From the Gare de Saint-Malo (train station), take bus line 1 or 2 towards Intra-Muros. Get off at the Intra-Muros stop, which is just outside the city walls. From there, it's a short walk to the Château de Saint-Malo on Place Chateaubriand. A single bus ticket costs €1.35 and is valid for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Taxi
From the Saint-Malo train station, a taxi ride to the Château de Saint-Malo takes approximately 10 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxis are readily available outside the station. Expect to pay around €15-€20 for the ride.
