Couvent des Jacobins: A Gothic Masterpiece

Explore the Couvent des Jacobins in Toulouse: a medieval architectural gem with a rich history and the final resting place of St. Thomas Aquinas.

4.6

The Couvent des Jacobins, located in the heart of Toulouse, is a stunning example of Southern Gothic architecture and a testament to the city's rich history. Founded in 1230 by the Dominican order, also known as the Jacobins, the monastery played a crucial role in the region's intellectual and religious life. The exterior of the church is austere, built of brick, typical of the region. However, the interior is surprisingly luminous, with soaring vaults and a unique double nave. The highlight is the spectacular 'palm tree' vault in the choir, where a single column branches out into 22 ribs, resembling the leaves of a palm. Beneath the altar lie the relics of St. Thomas Aquinas, adding to the site's significance. The walls are painted with trompe-l'œil to imitate marble, considered more noble than brick. The cloister, built between 1307 and 1310, features 160 marble columns. The surrounding buildings, including the chapter house and refectory, were constructed in the 14th century. The Chapelle Saint-Antonin and Chapelle de la Vierge offer tranquil spaces for reflection. Today, the Couvent des Jacobins hosts concerts, exhibitions, and cultural events, continuing its legacy as a center of learning and contemplation.
