Discover more about Fontaine des Puits-Clos

The Fontaine des Puits-Clos, located on Rue des Puits-Clos in Toulouse, is more than just a fountain; it's a celebration of the city's artistic heritage. Created in 1984 by Bernard Calley, an architect of French buildings, the fountain was designed to embellish a previously unremarkable wall between Place du Capitole and Place Esquirol. The fountain's design incorporates Corinthian columns from the Dalbade church's altarpiece (dating from 1741-1749), which had been stored since the 1930s. These pink marble columns support an entablature and a pediment. The fountain also featured a cast-iron statue of Psyche, a replica of an 1867 sculpture by Pierre-Bernard Prouha, which was sadly stolen in 2010. The fountain marks a revival of fountains in urban spaces during the 1970s and 1980s, aiming to enhance cityscapes. The structure is adorned with brickwork of varying colors, and three copper basins collect water distributed by three spouts. The fountain offers a peaceful retreat and a picturesque scene for locals and tourists alike.
