The theatre's story began in 1736 when the Capitouls, Toulouse's municipal magistrates, decided to construct a dedicated performance space within the Maison commune (Town Hall). The first auditorium, designed by Guillaume Cammas, opened in 1737. Over the years, the Théâtre du Capitole has undergone numerous transformations. It was renovated in 1818, and after a fire in 1917, it was rebuilt in 1923 in a neo-Baroque style. The front of house areas were modernized in 1996. Today, the theater boasts a seating capacity of 1,156 and continues to host a diverse program of operas, ballets, and concerts.
