Pont Neuf: Toulouse's Enduring Bridge

Despite its name, meaning 'New Bridge' in French, the Pont Neuf is the oldest bridge across the Garonne in Toulouse. Construction began in 1544 and concluded in 1632, a period marked by engineering challenges and the Garonne's unpredictable nature. King Francis I initiated the project with strategic interests in mind, envisioning the bridge as crucial for defense against Spain.The Pont Neuf stands as a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Unlike older medieval bridges cluttered with shops and houses, the Pont Neuf was designed to be free of such obstructions. The bridge incorporates elements from Roman antiquity and the Italian Renaissance, featuring arches, piers with openings (oculi) to relieve water pressure during floods, and avant-becs. These features not only contribute to its aesthetic appeal but also to its structural resilience.Spanning 220 meters, the bridge has seven arches that cross the Garonne River. The bridge is not perfectly straight because the left bank of the river is lower than the right bank.
