The Fondation Bemberg, nestled within the Hôtel d'Assézat in Toulouse, offers a captivating journey through Western art history. This unique museum, established in 1995, showcases the extensive private collection of Argentinian art lover Georges Bemberg, who lent his collection to the city of Toulouse. The Hôtel d'Assézat itself is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Built between 1555 and 1562 for Pierre d'Assézat, a wealthy woad merchant, the hôtel features a stunning courtyard with classical facades adorned with Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders. The iconic corner tower, the tallest private tower in the city, adds to the building's grandeur. The Bemberg Foundation's collection includes paintings, sculptures, drawings, and objets d'art from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Highlights include works by French modern masters such as Monet, Degas, Matisse, and Bonnard, as well as 18th-century Venetian paintings. Don't miss the room dedicated to Pierre Bonnard, featuring 35 of his paintings. The collection also features works by Canaletto, Cranach the Elder, Veronese, and Titian. After a three-year renovation, the Bemberg Foundation reopened in February 2024 with modernized museography and improved accessibility.
