Discover more about Château de Tours

The Château de Tours, situated on the banks of the Loire River, boasts a rich history that spans centuries. Originally built in the 11th century on the remains of Gallo-Roman baths, it served as a residence for the Counts of Anjou before becoming a royal castle in the 13th century under Philippe-Auguste. The castle was expanded into a defensive fortress to resist potential attacks. Over the years, the Château de Tours has served various purposes, including an arsenal, a begging depot, and military barracks. It even functioned as a stone quarry for constructing the river docks. Today, only the Logis of Governors and the Tower of Guise remain from the medieval structure. Classified as a monument historique in 1913, the Château de Tours now serves as a cultural and heritage center. It hosts contemporary art exhibitions, including paintings and photographs, in collaboration with the Jeu de Paume museum. Archaeological digs have unearthed artifacts that contribute to the permanent exhibition on the urban evolution of Tours. Visitors can explore the castle's architecture and learn about its transformation through the ages.
