Discover more about Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre

The Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, often called Sacré-Cœur, is a major religious building in Paris. Located at the summit of Montmartre, it stands 130 meters above the city, making it visible from afar. The basilica is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and serves as a sanctuary for Eucharistic adoration and divine mercy. Conceived after the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), the basilica was envisioned as a symbol of national penance and spiritual renewal. Construction began in 1875 and was completed in 1914. The architect, Paul Abadie, designed it in the Romano-Byzantine style, which was popular at the time. The basilica's design features a Greek cross layout with four domes, with the central dome reaching a height of 83 meters. The white stone, sourced from Château-Landon and Souppes-sur-Loing, has the unique characteristic of hardening and whitening when exposed to rain. Inside, visitors can admire the stunning mosaics, stained glass windows, and the grand organ. The mosaic in the choir is one of the largest in the world, covering 475 square meters. The basilica also offers the opportunity to climb to the dome for panoramic views of Paris. With nearly eleven million pilgrims and visitors annually, it is the second most visited religious site in Paris, after Notre-Dame Cathedral. The basilica is open daily from 6:30 am to 10:30 pm, and admission is free.
