Au Lapin Agile: Montmartre's Historic Cabaret

Nestled on the slopes of Montmartre at 22 Rue des Saules, Au Lapin Agile stands as a living testament to Parisian history and culture. Established in 1860, this intimate cabaret has evolved from its early days as a meeting place known as 'Au Rendez-vous des voleurs' (Thieves Meeting Point) and later, more ominously, as the 'Cabaret des Assassins'. The name 'Au Lapin Agile' (The Nimble Rabbit) emerged after artist André Gill's whimsical painting of a rabbit jumping out of a saucepan. Au Lapin Agile has long been a haven for artists, writers, and musicians. In the early 20th century, the cabaret was saved from demolition by Aristide Bruant, a cabaret singer, who passed the tenancy to Frédé Gérard. It became a preferred venue for artists like Picasso, Modigliani, and Apollinaire, who often exchanged their artwork for drinks. Picasso's 1905 painting, 'Au Lapin Agile,' contributed significantly to the cabaret's global recognition; the painting was sold for $41 million in 1989 and is now displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Today, Au Lapin Agile maintains its informal and intimate atmosphere, offering a unique glimpse into traditional French culture. The cabaret showcases poets and singers performing French songs, some dating back to the 15th century. Performances typically run from 9 PM to 1 AM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The current owner, Yves Mathieu, and his family are dedicated to preserving the heritage of French song, creating a welcoming space for both artists and audiences.
