The park's history is as intriguing as its design. Before becoming a beloved public space, the area was a bare hill used as a public dump and a site for the Montfaucon gibbet. The soil's composition prevented vegetation growth, lending it the name 'Chauve-mont,' meaning 'bare hill'.
Today, the park is a haven for relaxation and recreation. Key features include the Lac du Belvédère, an artificial lake, and the Temple de la Sibylle, a Roman-style temple perched atop the island in the lake. Visitors can cross Gustave Eiffel's suspension bridge to reach the island. The park also boasts a grotto with artificial stalactites and a waterfall, adding to its romantic charm.
