    Discover more about Royal Chapel

The Royal Chapel of Versailles, a breathtaking masterpiece of sacred architecture, represents the culmination of Louis XIV's artistic vision for the palace. Officially announced in 1682, construction began in 1699 and concluded in 1710. It was the fifth chapel to be built on the site since the reign of Louis XIII. Dedicated to Saint Louis, the patron saint of the King, the chapel's design echoes the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. The chapel's exterior boasts sculpted decorations and a harmonious blend of grandeur and spirituality. Inside, light streams through large windows, illuminating the soaring ceilings adorned with frescoes. The two-story interior features a layout typical of Palatine chapels, with a powerful colonnade inspired by antiquity. The vaulted ceiling, devoid of transverse ribs, showcases Antoine Coypel's depiction of God the Father in his Glory. Charles de La Fosse's The Resurrection graces the apse, while Jean Jouvenet's The Descent of the Holy Ghost adorns the royal tribune. The Royal Chapel held immense significance in the spiritual life of the French monarchy. Royal ceremonies, including weddings, baptisms, and funerals, took place within its walls. The chapel also hosted daily mass attended by the King and court. The chapel's music, played on a grand organ designed by Clicquot, was renowned throughout Europe. Today, the Royal Chapel hosts over 40 sacred music concerts annually, allowing visitors to experience the acoustics of this architectural jewel.
