    Discover more about Castle Hugstein

Castle Hugstein, a ruined fortress on the border of Buhl and Guebwiller in the Haut-Rhin department of France, offers a captivating journey into the region's medieval past. Built in 1227 by Abbot Hugo of Rothenburg, it served as a defensive site for Murbach Abbey and a symbol of authority over the town of Guebwiller. Over the centuries, the castle underwent several transformations. In 1313, a chapel was added, and during the 15th century, Abbot Barthélémy d'Andlau modernized the structure, adding a gate tower. The castle faced turbulent times, including damage during the Hundred Years' War and the Thirty Years' War. It was eventually abandoned and used as a stone quarry after the French Revolution. Today, visitors can explore the remains of this once-imposing structure, including the 10-meter diameter cylindrical keep and the ramparts. The site is maintained by the municipalities of Buhl and Guebwiller and is freely accessible to the public. From its hilltop location, Castle Hugstein provides panoramic views of the Florival valley and surrounding area, offering a rewarding experience for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
