Discover more about Rocher Hans

Rocher Hans, also known as Château Hans, is a prominent rock formation situated in the Haut-Rhin department of France, within the commune of Orbey. Rising to an altitude of 1,144 meters, it dominates the landscape near Lac Blanc in the Vosges Mountains. This ruiniform rock is crowned with a statue of the Madonna, which was placed in 1977. The statue bears the inscription: "Blessed Virgin, protect our flowered valley." It was created by craftsman Conti and sealed on August 26, 1977, by the Parolini sons, with Mrs. Jean Baldinger and Mr. Guido Parolini as godparents. The site is accessible via a hiking trail marked by the Club Vosgien, with metal railings along some sections. The ascent, especially via the rock face from the Lac Blanc car park, can be challenging. However, the panoramic views from the top are well worth the effort. Rocher Hans is also a popular destination for rock climbing, with a climbing school established on the site. In winter, icefalls up to 100 meters high can be seen in the surrounding area. Several legends surround Rocher Hans, including one about a disbelieving lord named Hans whose castle was swallowed by the lake's waters. These legends inspired a four-act play by writer Maurice Pottecher, "Le château de Hans," which tells the story of a woodcutter named Hans and his search for happiness.
