This site marks the location of the former Abbey of Saint Gregory, a Benedictine abbey founded around 660 AD. The abbey played a significant role in the re-establishment of Christianity in the region after the decline of the Roman Empire. Throughout its history, the abbey experienced periods of growth and conflict. By the end of the 9th century, it controlled a large portion of the Munster valley.
