Mont Rotui: Moorea's Majestic Peak
Hike Mont Rotui in Moorea for breathtaking panoramic views, a challenging trek, and a glimpse into Polynesian legends and natural beauty.
Mont Rotui stands as an iconic symbol of Moorea, a picturesque island celebrated for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. This majestic mountain peak, reaching an elevation of 899 meters (2,950 feet), dramatically ascends from the verdant landscape, providing breathtaking panoramic views. Hiking to the summit of Mont Rotui is a captivating and challenging experience, typically taking 5 to 7 hours for the 7-kilometer roundtrip. The trail is rated as hard due to steep inclines and exposed ridges. The most popular route, the North Ridge Route, begins near the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa or the Ta'ahiamanu public beach. The ascent passes through flame tree groves, requiring careful footing and occasional scrambling over rocks. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with unparalleled views of Moorea's twin bays, Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay, the island's lush interior, and the sparkling blue lagoon stretching out to the horizon. The mountain is considered sacred by the indigenous Polynesian people, adding a layer of cultural significance to the natural allure. According to local legend, Hiro, the God of Thieves, attempted to steal Mont Rotui, but the god Pai thwarted his efforts by piercing a nearby mountain with his spear, creating Mou'a Puta. Another legend says that the head of an octopus rests on Mont Rotui, with its tentacles forming the island's mountain chain.
