Musée Gauguin: A Tribute to the Master in Hiva Oa

Located in Atuona, Hiva Oa, the Musée Gauguin stands as a tribute to the renowned French painter Paul Gauguin, who spent the last years of his life in the Marquesas Islands. The museum, officially named Centre Culturel Paul Gauguin, was completed in 2003 to mark the centennial of Gauguin's death. It serves to preserve and share the artistic legacy that Gauguin left to the Marquesas Islands, where he lived from 1901 to 1903. Inside, visitors will find a permanent exhibition dedicated to Gauguin's life and work. While the works on display are reproductions, as the originals reside in museums across major capitals, they offer a comprehensive overview of his artistic journey. These reproductions were created by artists Claude and Viera Farina, and later by painter Marc Touret. The museum also features a replica of Gauguin's house, the 'Maison du Jouir' (House of Pleasure), providing a glimpse into his living environment in Hiva Oa.
