Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
The primary access to Vaipo Waterfall is via a 2-3 hour hike from Hakaui Bay. From the main village of Taioha'e, arrange for a boat transfer to Hakaui Valley. Boat transfers can be arranged from the fishing port near the fruit and vegetable market. From Hakaui Bay, follow the well-marked trail through the valley towards the waterfall, crossing the river several times. The trail is approximately 4 km each way. Be prepared for stream crossings and potentially slippery conditions.
Boat
Alternatively, inquire about boat tours from Taioha'e harbor that may take you closer to Vaipo Waterfall. These tours typically include stops at other points of interest along the coast. However, even with a boat tour, a hike will likely be required to reach the base of the waterfall. Confirm the details and schedule with the boat operators at the harbor.
