Cascade de Fautaua: Tahiti's Majestic Waterfall

Cascade de Fautaua, or Fachoda Falls, is one of Tahiti's most impressive natural wonders, cascading down almost 300 meters into a shallow pool known as Bain Loti. The pool is named after French writer Pierre Loti, who once resided in the valley. The waterfall is also called Fachoda Falls, named after Fort Fachoda, the ruins of which are found near the top of the falls. The Fautaua Valley, situated between Papeete and Pirae, is a lush, green river valley, accessible via a 3-kilometer path from the gate of Polynésienne des Eaux. The hike to the falls offers two routes after crossing the Fachoda bridge: one that follows the river to the base of the falls, and another that ascends to the top, passing basalt boulders and natural pools. The upper trail leads to the ruins of Fort Fachoda and the Governor's Gardens. Hiking to Cascade de Fautaua is a rewarding experience, with trails ranging from moderate to challenging. The hike generally takes 3-6 hours, depending on the chosen route. Along the way, hikers can enjoy the diverse flora and fauna, including tropical plants, colorful birds, and butterflies. Permits are required to hike to Fautaua Waterfall and can be obtained from the Papeete city hall.
