Located in Arue, the Tomb of King Pōmare V is a poignant reminder of Tahiti's royal past and the final resting place of King Pōmare V, who reigned during a pivotal time in Tahitian history. The imposing monument, a pyramid with a rectangular base and topped with an amphora, is constructed entirely of cemented coral blocks.
Originally built for his mother, Queen Pōmare IV, who ruled Tahiti for fifty years, King Pōmare V had her remains moved to the Royal Pomare Cemetery so he could be buried there. He wanted his corpse to enjoy the ocean vista. King Pōmare V's reign lasted only three years (1877-1880) before he ceded Tahiti and its dependencies to France. He died of alcoholism in 1891.
The tomb is open daily and provides a serene space for reflection and appreciation of Polynesian history. Visitors can enjoy the surrounding lush greenery and breathtaking views of the South Pacific Ocean.
