Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Tbilisi, take a minibus (marshrutka) from Didube Metro station to Borjomi. Minibuses depart frequently between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with a journey time of approximately 2 hours and 36 minutes. The fare is around $6. Alternatively, take a train from Tbilisi Central Station to Borjomi. There are two daily trains, and the journey takes approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes. Tickets cost 2 GEL and can be purchased on board. From Borjomi, you can take a local taxi or walk to the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park Visitor Center to start your exploration. A taxi from the Borjomi train station to the visitor center will cost approximately 5-10 GEL.

  • Driving

    From Tbilisi, drive west towards Borjomi via the E60 highway. The distance is approximately 160 km, and the drive takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes. Parking is available near the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park Visitor Center. Parking fees are approximately 5 GEL per day. Note that road conditions can vary, especially during winter months, so check the forecast before you travel.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, one of the largest in Europe, spans over 85,000 hectares in central Georgia, encompassing the regions of Imereti, Samtskhe-Javakheti, and Shida Kartli. Established in 1995 with support from organizations like the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the park officially opened in 2001, becoming the first national park in the Caucasus region to meet international standards. Historically, the area served as hunting grounds for Georgian royalty and later became a favored retreat for Russian nobility in the 19th century. The mineral-rich springs of Borjomi, located near the park, have been famous for centuries, attracting visitors seeking their healing properties. Today, the park protects natural springs that provide potable water for 10,000 residents of Borjomi town. The park's diverse geographical and ecological zones host over 1,200 plant species and a wide array of fauna, including rare and endangered species. Visitors can encounter Caucasian deer, roe deer, brown bears, lynxes, and over 200 species of birds, including the golden eagle and Caucasian black grouse. Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park offers a network of 12 marked trails for hiking, horseback riding, biking and snowshoeing, catering to various preferences and fitness levels. These trails vary in length and difficulty, accommodating both day trips and multi-day adventures. Tourist shelters, picnic spots, and camping areas are available along the routes.
