Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Batumi, take minibus #40 towards Chakvi from near the Argo cable car. Inform the driver you're going to Mtirala National Park and get off at the Mtirala National Park sign in Chakvi. From there, take a taxi to the visitor center, which is about 15 km away. Minibus fare to Chakvi is approximately 1 GEL. A taxi from Chakvi to the visitor center will cost around 20-30 GEL one way.

  • Taxi

    Take a taxi directly from Batumi to Mtirala National Park. The fare is approximately 40 GEL one way. Arrange for the taxi to wait for your return trip or negotiate with local taxi drivers for a return fare, as it may be difficult to find a taxi back to Batumi from the park.

  • Car

    Rent a car in Batumi and drive to Mtirala National Park. The drive takes about an hour and covers approximately 30 km. Follow the road to Chakvi and then continue on the narrow road alongside the river to the visitor center. Parking is available at the visitor center. Car rental costs start at around 80 GEL per day.

The park's name, which translates to 'crying' in Georgian, reflects its reputation as one of the wettest areas in the country, receiving up to 4,520 mm of rainfall annually. This high level of precipitation contributes to the park's lush, subtropical forests, creating a unique and vibrant ecosystem. Established in 2007, Mtirala National Park covers an area of 15,698.8 hectares and is home to a wide variety of plant and animal life. The park's flora includes Colchis wet deciduous and mixed forests, with species such as sowing chestnut and oriental beech. The undergrowth is rich with Pontic rhododendron, cherry laurel, and Colchis boxwood. The park also provides habitats for a diverse range of fauna, including brown bears, roe deer, wild boars, and various bird species. Visitors to Mtirala National Park can explore two main hiking trails. The shorter Tsalbnari trail is an easy 7-kilometer loop that passes along the Chakvistskali River, leading to a picturesque lake and the Tsalbnari waterfall. The longer Tvistskaro trail is a more challenging 16-kilometer hike that leads through lush forests to a tourist shelter. Other activities available in the park include ziplining and visiting the rope park. The park is located approximately 25 kilometers from Kobuleti and 27 kilometers from the administrative building, with the visitor center situated in Chakvi village.
