Discover more about Sighnaghi Wall

The Sighnaghi Wall, an enduring symbol of the town's history, was constructed in the 18th century during the reign of King Erekle II as a sanctuary for those seeking refuge from invaders. This impressive fortification, also known as the Great Wall of Georgia, once encircled the entire city, serving as a vital defense for both locals and residents of the surrounding villages. Originally, the 4-kilometer-long defensive wall featured 28 towers, each uniquely named after the village it connected to Sighnaghi. These towers incorporated gateways with swift opening and closing mechanisms, showcasing the ingenuity of their construction. Villagers played a crucial role in building their respective towers, forging a strong connection between the community and its defense. The King's Tower held political importance, while the Bodbe Tower was revered for its religious significance. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved sections of the wall in the city's historic districts. Although a complete walk along the original circuit isn't possible, exploring the historic gates offers a glimpse into the past. The wall provides an incredible vantage point for panoramic views of the verdant vineyards of Kakheti and the distant snow-capped peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. Sunset is particularly mesmerizing, painting the wall and town in hues of gold and crimson. Inside the fortress walls, you'll find St. Stephan's Basilica, an 18th-century church built during a time of tumult, underscoring the Kakhetians' faith as a refuge in uncertain times. The cobblestone streets of Sighnaghi, lined with charming houses adorned with wooden balconies, lead to the wall, where you can learn about its history and significance.
