Walking
The final approach to Kazbegi Glacier involves a challenging hike from Stepantsminda. Begin by walking north through the town, crossing the Terek River. Follow the road towards Gergeti village, then ascend to the Gergeti Trinity Church via the Bashi Valley route for optimal views. From the church, continue uphill on the marked trail towards the glacier. Be prepared for a steep, rocky climb with significant elevation gain. The hike from Stepantsminda to the glacier and back typically takes 8-10 hours. There are no entrance fees or tolls, but allow for costs for water and snacks.
Public Transport
While public transport doesn't directly reach the glacier, you can take a marshrutka (minibus) from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda for approximately 15 GEL. From Stepantsminda, taxis or 4x4 vehicles can take you partway up to the Gergeti Trinity Church for around 40 GEL, but the final leg to the glacier requires hiking. Alternatively, during the summer (May 1 to October 31), buses depart from Stepantsminda to some of the most beautiful places in the region every day. This is the most convenient and cheapest option to get to Truso Valley, Juta, Darial Gorge and Gergeti Trinity Church.
