Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Batumi, take minibus #40 towards Chakvi from near the lower station of the Argo cable car. Inform the driver you're going to Mtirala National Park and get off at the stop for Mtirala in Chakvi. From there, take a taxi to the visitor center in Chakvistavi, approximately 15 km away. Minibus fare to Chakvi is around 1 GEL. A taxi from Chakvi to the visitor center will cost approximately 20-30 GEL one way.

    Take a taxi directly from Batumi to Mtirala National Park. The one-way fare is approximately 40 GEL. Arrange for the taxi to return you to Batumi, as it can be difficult to find a taxi at the park. Negotiate a price for the round trip and waiting time, which may cost around 100 GEL.

  • Car Rental

    Rent a car in Batumi and drive to Mtirala National Park. The drive is approximately 30 km and takes about an hour. Follow the road to Chakvi and then continue on the narrow road towards Chakvistavi. The road is mostly paved, with a small section of gravel. Parking is available at the visitor center in Chakvistavi.

Mtirala National Park, located roughly 30 km northeast of Batumi, is a haven of biodiversity and natural beauty in the Adjara region of Georgia. Established in 2007 to protect the area's unique environment and promote ecotourism, Mtirala is known as the wettest place in the country, with annual rainfall reaching a staggering 4,520 mm. This constant precipitation gives rise to incredibly lush and green landscapes, reminiscent of a rainforest. The park's diverse flora includes endemic species from the Georgian, Adjarian, Colchic, and Caucasian regions. Keep an eye out for rare plants from ancient Colchis, some of which are endangered and listed in the Red Book. The park is also home to a variety of fauna, including mammals like boars, foxes, and even brown bears, as well as diverse birdlife. Visitors can explore Mtirala via several well-maintained hiking trails. The popular Tsalbnari Waterfall Trail is a 7.7-kilometer loop that takes about 3 hours, leading you past a turquoise lake and the stunning 16-meter Tsalbnari Waterfall. For a more challenging experience, the Mtirala Extended Loop covers 12.4 kilometers and takes around 5.5 hours to complete, offering a chance to explore more remote areas of the park. Experienced hikers can tackle the Didi Tirala Mountain trail, a 28.6-kilometer out-and-back route with breathtaking views of Batumi and the Black Sea. Beyond hiking, Mtirala offers other attractions, including a zipline and a rope park. The visitor center in Chakvistavi provides information, maps, and guided tours. You can also find guesthouses, small shops selling local honey, and restaurants in the village. Swimming is allowed in the lake, though the water can be cold.
