The Svan Tower, or Svanuri K'oshk'i, located in Jvari, stands as a proud symbol of the Svaneti region's unique cultural heritage. Primarily constructed between the 9th and 12th centuries, during Georgia's Golden Age, their origins may predate this period. It is estimated that around 200 towers are still standing in the Svaneti region. These towers, either freestanding or attached to residential houses, are characterized by their tapering stone structure and towering height. Typically, they have 4-5 stories, with the wall thickness decreasing with height. The upper floors were primarily used for defense, featuring machicolated parapets and embrasures for launching projectiles. The entrance was often several meters above ground level, accessible by a ladder that could be raised for security. Inside, the towers consisted of stacked rooms connected by wooden ladders. The base of the towers was sturdy enough to withstand cataclysms. The towers served multiple functions, acting as mini-fortresses, watchtowers, and vaults for a family's most valuable possessions. In times of danger, fires would be lit on top of the towers to alert the local population. Today, climbing to the top of the tower offers visitors panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and peaks.
