Getting There

Driving

The only way to reach Mutso is via the road from Shatili and Korsha through the Datvisjvari Pass. Public transport (marshrutka vans) goes only as far as Shatili, so unless you have your own car, you will need to find a private driver to take you the rest of the way. From Shatili, it is approximately 12 kilometers or 45 minutes by road to Mutso. Be aware that road conditions in Khevsureti are varied, with challenging gravel roads prone to flooding and landslips. A 4WD vehicle is recommended. Park at the base of the castle and hike the last part, which is about a 20-minute walk uphill.

From the base of Mutso Hill, it's a short but steep climb (341 meters, including 91 meters uphill, duration 20-30 minutes) to the Mutso Fortress. Make sure to bring good hiking shoes.

Mutso Castle is a striking example of Georgia's remote and mysterious heritage. Located in the historic Khevsureti region, close to the Chechen border, the ancient village watches over the Ardoti River Valley. For centuries, it served as a stronghold, with its cluster of roughly 30 medieval stone houses, four combat towers, and numerous ruins dominating the landscape. Mutso's history is not definitively known, with theories suggesting construction as early as the 12th century during Queen Tamar's reign or later, around the 16th or 17th centuries. The village was eventually abandoned for reasons including a hard life and a plague outbreak. The plague burial grounds are still visible around the fortress. The Mutso Rehabilitation Project, launched in 2004, has revitalized the area. The reconstruction efforts have ensured that visitors can now explore this fascinating site, complete with combat towers, fortress houses, and shrines. One of the most notable sites is the shrine of St. George of Broliskalo, a revered spot where local legends and traditions still echo. According to local lore, the villagers worshiped an ancient icon of the Archangel, considering themselves part of a sacred army that guarded a legendary treasure hidden somewhere in the surrounding mountains.
