Discover more about Kutaisi Botanical Garden

Kutaisi Botanical Garden, located on the right bank of the Rioni River, offers a tranquil retreat in the heart of Kutaisi. Established in 1969, the garden's history stretches back to the 19th century when it began as a farm garden known as "Tchomi Park". Today, it stands as the second-largest botanical garden in Georgia, showcasing a diverse collection of plant species from various corners of the world. The garden is home to approximately 700 species of plants, trees, and shrubs, representing 210 plant species across 80 botanical families. As you explore the grounds, you'll encounter flora from North America, East Asia, and the Mediterranean, as well as specimens from botanical gardens in Moscow, Kyiv, and Riga. Many of these plants are even included in the Red Book of endangered species. One of the garden's most unique attractions is a 400-year-old oak tree with a chapel constructed inside its trunk. The hollow formed naturally in the mid-20th century, and in January 2014, after receiving blessings from the Georgian Orthodox Church, the chapel opened its doors. The chapel is adorned with sacred icons gifted by local residents, creating a serene and spiritual space. In recent years, the Kutaisi Botanical Garden has undergone significant renovations, including the addition of paved paths, artificial ponds, fountains, and an amphitheater that hosts concerts, performances, and local movie screenings. The garden is not only a place for relaxation and appreciation of nature but also a center for the preservation and protection of plant biodiversity.
