Bolnisi Museum: A Chronicle of Georgian Heritage

The Bolnisi Museum of History and Archaeology, inaugurated in 2020, stands as a modern cultural space dedicated to preserving and interpreting the rich history of the Kvemo Kartli region. Situated in the town of Bolnisi, the museum's collections span from the Stone Age to the late medieval times, offering visitors a comprehensive view of the area's development. The museum's exhibits highlight the region's significance in early human history, showcasing artifacts from nearby archaeological sites like Dmanisi, Arukhlo, and Sakdrisi. These sites have yielded evidence of hominin presence dating back 1.85 million years, the oldest evidence of early humans outside of Africa. The museum also dedicates a significant portion of its exhibit to the Shulaveri-Shomu culture, representing the first settlers in the South Caucasus following the Mesolithic period, around 6000 BC. Visitors can explore artifacts such as stone tools, jewelry, and pottery from the Bronze Age, as well as medieval inscriptions and architectural fragments. A unique aspect of the museum is its focus on the German population that migrated to the area two centuries ago, with exhibits detailing their cultural impact and contributions. The museum also houses a media library in collaboration with the German Goethe Institute, further underscoring the historical connection between Georgia and Germany.
