Gudiashvili Square: A Timeless Tbilisi Treasure

Gudiashvili Square, located in the Kala district of Old Tbilisi, is a captivating historical site with a history spanning over six centuries. The square's origins can be traced back to the 15th century, though it first appeared on Tbilisi's city plan in 1785. Throughout its existence, the square has been known by various names, including "Bejanas Baghi", "Abbas-Abasi Square", "Kolortaghi", "Alaverdov", and "Moghnis", each reflecting a different era in its vibrant past. In 2018, Gudiashvili Square underwent a significant restoration, which aimed to preserve its historical value. The refurbishment project focused on reinstating the original appearance of 16th-century houses and cellars, as well as creating a more welcoming space for visitors. Today, the square is home to several architectural treasures, including a residential building from the 1820s known as the "Blue House", which once served as the headquarters and officers' hotel for the Crown Prince of Russia and the Russian Army. Gudiashvili Square is located near Liberty Square, at the crossroads of Lermontovi, B. Akhospireli, Gia Abesadze, and Abo Tbileli streets. The square provides a peaceful retreat from the bustling city, with a picturesque lovers' fountain and benches that invite visitors to relax and soak in the atmosphere.
