4.7

Akhaltsikhe (Rabati) Castle, located in the city of Akhaltsikhe in southern Georgia, is a medieval fortress with a history stretching back to the 9th century when it was known as Lomsia Castle. Founded by Guaram Mampali, the castle served as a vital defensive structure, guarding trade routes between Georgia and Turkey. Over the centuries, the castle has experienced numerous invasions and transformations under various rulers, including Georgians, Armenians, Mongols, and Ottomans. In the 13th century, it became the residence of the Jakeli family, who ruled this part of Georgia as an independent principality. The Ottomans significantly modified the castle in the 17th and 18th centuries, adding a mosque, Turkish bath, and a prison. In 1828, the Russian army captured the castle, marking another turning point in its history. In 2011-2012, a large-scale restoration project revitalized the Rabati Castle, transforming it into a cultural city center. Today, the castle complex covers approximately seven hectares and is divided into modern and historical sections. The historical area features the Ahmediyeh Mosque, an Orthodox church, the Jakeli family castle, and a history museum, showcasing a range of artifacts, including weapons, armor, and ancient manuscripts. Visitors can explore the castle's impressive walls and towers, enjoy panoramic views, and immerse themselves in the diverse architectural styles that reflect the region's rich cultural heritage.
