From Tbilisi, drive towards Akhalkalaki. Then follow the road to Tambovka village. The final 4.5 kilometers into Tambovka is over an unsealed road, manageable in a sedan. From Tambovka, a bumpy, unpaved dirt track leads to the base of Shaori Mountain, requiring a 4WD vehicle or hiring a local driver.

From Tambovka village, hike to Shaori Fortress. The shorter route is a 1.2-kilometer loop, taking approximately 4 hours to complete. The trail is marked with signs, painted flags, and stone markers, but some sections require careful navigation over rocky terrain. Consider hiring a local guide in Tambovka for assistance.

Perched at 2,752 meters above sea level on Shaori Mountain, Shaori Fortress is a captivating megalithic site in Georgia's southern Samtskhe-Javakheti region. This rhomboid-shaped structure, built during the Bronze Age with massive basalt blocks using a dry masonry technique, showcases the remarkable engineering skills of its builders.Despite its historical significance, Shaori Fortress has never been subject to systematic archaeological study, leaving its origins and purpose shrouded in mystery. Some scholars speculate it may have been a temporary residence for tribal chiefs or a refuge during times of war. Others suggest a possible connection to astronomical observations or sacral pagan rituals, given the main entrance's alignment with the Solstice sun.Rediscovered by local shepherds, the fortress has withstood harsh winters and strong winds, remaining in remarkably good condition. Exploring the site involves walking around the walls and observing the various structures crafted from the rocks. The hike to the fortress also provides an opportunity to visit the village of Tambovka, a former Doukhobor settlement known for its charming blue-shuttered houses.
