St. Shio is said to have spent his final years as a hermit in a deep cave near Mtskheta, which led to the monastery being named Shiomgvime, meaning "Cave of Shio". The earliest structure, the Monastery of St. John the Baptist, dates back to 560-580 AD. This cruciform church, with its simple and strict design, reflects the architectural style of the time.
