Discover more about Armazi Citadel

Armazi Citadel, located 3 km west of Mtskheta, is a significant monument of old Georgian architecture. The fortress dates back to the 13th-15th centuries, though it's believed to mark the site where early kings of Iberia claimed their capital. Situated on a high, rocky ridge in the Armaziskhevi River gorge, it once guarded the road connecting countries through the Caucasus Mountains. Spanning 30 hectares, the citadel's ruins include a trapezoidal fence and a triangular tower constructed from crushed stone. The tower, with its rounded corners, originally had three floors; today, only the first two levels are relatively intact. The first floor was used for agricultural storage, while the second floor features large windows. To reach Armazi Citadel, a footpath commences near Mtskheta's western exit. The trail crosses a railway and car road before following the Armaziskhevi River. Nearby, you'll find other historical sites like Armaztsikhe (Bagineti), Armaziskhevi, and the Church of the Mother of God of Armazi.
