Originally named Alexander's Garden, it was renamed to commemorate the tragic events of April 9, 1989, when a peaceful demonstration for Georgian independence was violently dispersed by Soviet forces. Today, the park serves as a place of reflection and recreation.

The nearest metro station to 9 April Park is Rustaveli. Upon exiting the station, walk north along Rustaveli Avenue, and the park will be on your left. Tbilisi's public buses also stop frequently along Rustaveli Avenue. A single bus or metro fare is 1 GEL, payable via a MetroMoney card or a bank card.
