In the 6th century, Isidore of Samtavisi, one of the Assyrian Fathers, founded a monastery here. The present cathedral was constructed between 1025 and 1030, replacing an earlier basilica. The architect, Hilarion Samtavneli, created a masterpiece that would influence subsequent Georgian church designs. Earthquakes in the 14th and 15th centuries caused damage, leading to reconstructions by the Amilakhvari family.The exterior of the cathedral is notable for its elaborate carvings, especially on the eastern facade.
