Discover more about Castle of Khornabuji

Khornabuji Castle, a formidable ruin in eastern Georgia's Kakheti region, offers a glimpse into the country's long and storied past. Situated on the imposing Tsiv-Gombori Range, approximately 3 km north of Dedoplistsqaro, the castle's origins may stretch back to the end of the 1st millennium BC. It stands as a testament to the region's strategic importance throughout history. Originally, Khornabuji was the only fortification controlling the Iori and Alazani river valleys. The first written records of the castle date back to the 5th century, during the reign of Vakhtang I Gorgasali, when it was one of the largest settlements in Kakheti. Vakhtang I appointed a bishop here after building the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral at Mtskheta. Over the centuries, Khornabuji has experienced periods of destruction and reconstruction. In the late 5th or early 6th century, the Sasanians conquered Khornabuji, destroying the neighboring town. However, the castle endured, and the town reemerged. Some historical accounts suggest Queen Tamar reconstructed the castle in the 13th century, while others propose this refers to a different site. In 1264, Mongol invaders under Berke Khan devastated the Khornabuji township, causing survivors to relocate to Sighnaghi. The castle was later rebuilt under Heraclius II of Kartli-Kakheti. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Khornabuji Fortress, including its walls, towers, tunnels, stairs, and water reservoirs. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, providing a unique perspective on the region's history and strategic importance.
