Green Lake Travel Guide

Green Lake, or Mtsvane Tba, is a stunning alpine lake located in the Khulo municipality of Adjara, Georgia. Situated at an altitude of 2,058 meters (6,752 feet) on the northern slopes of the Arsian ridge, it's approximately 116 km from Batumi and 6 km from the Goderdzi Pass. The lake's name comes from its unique green hue, a result of mineralized waters and the reflection of the surrounding dense forests. The color shifts throughout the day, sometimes appearing turquoise or reflecting the colors of the evening sky.The lake is fed by cold, clear mountain springs, making the water potable, though very cold. The depth reaches 19.4 meters (63.6 feet). The bottom of the lake consists of volcanic rock, including tuff and basalt, remnants of the region's volcanic past. Interestingly, the lake is devoid of fish and algae.Green Lake is best visited between May and October, when the weather is milder and the area is free of snow. Visitors can enjoy hiking, picnics, and camping in the surrounding area. Boat and water bike rentals may be available. The journey to the lake itself is an adventure, often involving travel along high-mountain trails. Shepherds may be encountered during summer, offering local hospitality.
